“That Pesky Constitution May Get in the Way”: Ramaswamy Vows to Unconstitutionally Deport the Children of Undocumented Immigrants

GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has proposed unconstitutionally deporting the American-born children of undocumented immigrants.

It’s no secret that immigration is one of the main issues influencing the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Now, Ramaswamy – a child of immigrants himself – has said that he will deport the American-born children of undocumented immigrants if he makes it to the White House. 

 

Deporting the Family Unit

“The family unit will be deported. The children would be deported along with their families,” Ramaswamy said. Ramaswamy was born in Ohio to Indian immigrant parents. He was raised in the state and went on to build a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry.

 

The 14th Amendment

In practice, Ramaswamy’s promise is a vow to throw aside the Constitution. According to the 14th Amendment, children born in the U.S. are citizens regardless of the status of their parents. It says: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

 

Putting Xenophobia Above the Constitution

Ramaswamy, however, doesn’t believe that the aforementioned amendment gives the children of undocumented immigrants citizenship. “Under the legal theory that the child of an illegal immigrant is not someone who enjoys birthright citizenship, then it would be perfectly legally permissible to remove the entire family unit,” he said.

Ramaswamy isn’t alone in his stance. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ campaign claimed that birthright citizenship is “inconsistent with the original understanding of the 14th Amendment.” Moreover, criminal defendant Donald Trump promised to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants with an executive order.

 

Another Anti-LGBTQ+ Politician

Ramaswamy also supports fighting the flow of drugs into the U.S. from Mexico with military action. Moreover, he believes the LGBTQ+ community is a “cult” and – perhaps showcasing a deep-rooted ignorance of modern science – said it puts “faith” above “facts,” something quite ironic when one considers the Republican Party’s religious support.

To top it all off, Ramaswamy – unlike other GOP candidates – proudly compares himself to criminal defendant Donald Trump. “I’m more similar to Trump in 2015 than Trump today is to Trump in 2015,” he said.

 

The Internet’s Response

News of Ramaswamy’s promise to ignore the Constitution was shared across the internet and reactions were mixed. Some people agreed with his stance, saying it would be best for America. Others condemned him, called out his apparent lack of empathy, and said the Constitution must always be respected. 

 

Wrong and Hateful

Quite a few people were absolutely astounded by Ramaswamy’s promise. One social media commenter wrote: “You can’t deport a natural-born American citizen because of who their parents are. That is wrong, hateful, and just plain nuts.”

 

The Clear Hypocrisy

Pointing out Ramaswamy’s hypocrisy, one person said: “This coming from a guy whose parents were non-citizens when he was born and, to this day, his father is still not a citizen and he enjoys citizenship via birthright as his mother got her citizenship after his birth.”

 

A Pop Culture Comparison

Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another individual said: “People like Ramaswamy kind of remind me of Voldemort. He hated muggles despite being half muggle himself. Not exactly the same but definitely a comparison that pops into my mind.”

 

Ramaswamy Has Some Nerve

Another person wrote: “His parents came to this country as undocumented immigrants. Talk tough on immigration. He has some nerve to try and talk tough on immigration policy when his own parents were in this country illegally.”

 

That Pesky Constitution

Others criticized all politicians: “Damn, that pesky Constitution may get in the way. Amazes me that many of our elected representatives don’t know the basics. Do they just spew this unconstitutional garbage to stir up their base?”

 

World War II Germany

Some people compared a hypothetical America under the current GOP to Nazi Germany. One such individual said: “That’s not how that works. You are born here, you are an American citizen. Period. What is it about these nasty Republicans that can’t even follow the Constitution? They want us to live like World War II Germany – constantly in fear for our own safety because of who is in power.”

 

A Younger Trump

Plenty of people compared Ramaswamy and Trump. One person said: “Ramaswamy is just another Trump but handsome and young. I hope people see through him but then there are many who still support Trump fully knowing that he’s a traitor. This guy is dangerous.”

 

No Free Passes

Defending Ramaswamy’s vow, one individual wrote: “He is just saying if the parent is deported, they need to take the family with them. They should not get a free pass just because they had babies on this land.”

 

An Adult Choice

Another commenter said: “The children need to be deported with their parents. When they become adults, the choice will be theirs to return to the U.S. Having a child inside the U.S. does not bestow citizenship to the parents.”

 

Modifying the 14th Amendment

Others called for the 14th Amendment to be changed. One such person wrote: “Agree 110%. The 14th Amendment was enacted to make freed slaves U.S. citizens. It was not meant for children who are born here to illegals. That’s why many illegals come here, to have babies and get government assistance. The 14th Amendment now needs to be modified or repealed.”
