President Biden recently talked about the United States’ latest job report. His speech, however, appeared to contain several incorrect claims about his administration’s accomplishments.
Debt and Deficit
Biden claimed to have reduced the federal debt by $1.7 trillion. Reportedly, this is not the case and the federal debt has actually increased by over $5 trillion. This likely wasn’t a malicious lie, however, as it appears that Biden mixed up the words “debt” and “deficit.” Following the blunder, the White House was quick to put out the correct information.
A New Tax Policy
Biden also said that, in 2021 and 2022, a new tax policy bettered the budget situation. The policy in question, however, was only brought in in 2023, meaning it couldn’t possibly have done anything in the two previous years.
Taxing Large Corporations
The president went on to discuss a new 15% tax rate for large corporations. Despite his claim, a study has shown that the tax in question – which only targets companies that bring in more than $1 billion a year – will only impact 14 eligible corporations out of a total of 55. According to experts, the tax could reduce the deficit by $222 billion by 2031.
Boasting About Unemployment
Biden went on to boast about low unemployment – but the statistics he used were found to be outdated. While he was correct about women’s unemployment being the lowest it’s been for 70 years, unemployment among Black people, Hispanic people, and disabled people has gone up.
Cognitive Decline or Lies?
Biden’s incorrect claims have led to questions about his integrity and mental competence. It’s possible that none of his incorrect assertions were malicious lies and that they were rather symptoms of an 80-year-old man’s cognitive decline. On the other hand, politicians lie – no matter what side they’re on. There is a distinct possibility that the president knew exactly what he was doing.
The Internet’s Response
News of Biden’s blunders was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to give their views. While many people criticized him, others pointed out that all politicians lie and that they should all be held accountable.
Lying Like Trump
One commenter expressed disappointment in Biden. They wrote: “The constant lies are one of the things that upset me the most about Biden. When I voted for him, I really thought he’d be better about this than Trump.”
Not as Bad as Trump
Plenty of people, while condemning him, said that Biden isn’t as bad as Trump. “I strongly believe our elected representatives should be truthful and use meaningful and precise language. But in the grand scheme of things, and relative to his likely 2024 opponent, these aren’t exactly whoppers. Let’s keep some perspective,” one person said.
The Political Machine
One commenter, rather than understanding that people supported Biden in order to get Trump out of the White House, said that those who voted for the current POTUS must be brainwashed. They wrote: “This guy is a joke. It just goes to show you how the political machine brainwashed people to vote for him.”
A Lying Contest
Others pointed out that Democrats and Republicans both lie: “Many Republicans say the Capitol insurrection was a walk in the park and completely justified and that Trump is a nice fellow and completely blameless. How far back shall we begin the lying contest between Dems and GOP?”
Calling Biden a Clown
Some commenters called Biden a “clown.” One such person said: “I wonder if someone sits down with the clown every day and tells him, ‘Hey Joe, 90% of what you said today is a lie and everybody knows it.’”
Fumbling the Facts
One person compared Biden’s situation to instances of hypothetical “lying” and “fumbling” in a more average job. They wrote: “Would you be able to keep your job in the real world if you lied and fumbled the facts every day? Of course not. You would be fired immediately.”
Attacking Hunter Biden
Some commenters, rather heartlessly, attacked Biden’s son – Hunter – for having a mental illness. One individual said: “Biden has no shame. He is a narcissist [and] pathological liar. He’s been lying to Americans for 50 years. No wonder Crackhead Hunter is such a thief.”
A Reasonable Response
Others offered more reasonable responses. One person wrote: “Sounds like the speech writer needs to be fired. I would almost guarantee Biden was reading off the prompter. So who in his administration reads the final draft?”
It Keeps Getting Worse
Echoing the aforementioned individual, another person said: “Wonder who his speech writer is. Biden reads off a teleprompter. He doesn’t have the mental capacity to come up with accurate numbers. The problem with being a liar is you have to keep up with your lies and he can’t do that either. He lost all credibility on day one and it keeps getting worse.”
Biden or Trump?
Some commenters, despite discussing Biden, sounded as if they were referring to Donald Trump. One such individual said: “Biden has no credibility. He will lie whenever he opens his mouth and makes everything about him, except when he should take responsibility for something that went wrong.”
All Politicians Lie
Others said that all politicians are corrupt liars looking for more wealth: “Politicians lie. Shocker. Trump lies, Biden lies, Obama lies. They all lie. They’re all rich capitalists looking to get richer and gain more power. The sooner people realize this, the better.”
Working People vs. Capitalist Class
Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person said: “America needs to wake up and realize that it isn’t Dem vs. GOP. It’s us vs. them. The working people vs. the capitalist class. They all lie. Stop taking sides.”
