“Jesus Was a Middle Eastern Refugee”: Evangelical Writer Urges Christians to See Trump for the Sinner He Is

An evangelical writer from the Charlotte Observer has spoken out against fellow Christians who continue to support former President Donald Trump.

Distorting Jesus’ Teachings

Isaac Bailey, the writer in question, criticized those within his faith who are deceived into thinking that Trump aligns with their values. He drew inspiration from Russel Moore, a Christian leader and editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, who pointed out that some believers, influenced by Trump, are distorting Jesus’ teachings.

A Misguided Perception of Trump

Bailey suggested that some believers might perceive Trump as a figure resembling the Jesus depicted in the Book of Revelation – the King of Kings who returns to judge the righteous and unrighteous. This perception might prevent them from critically assessing Trump’s actions.

A Cautionary Tale for Christians

The writer said that many of these believers view Trump’s legal troubles not as accountability within democracy but as unjust persecution, comparing it to the lashes on Jesus’ back. Bailey referenced an instance where a Christian man, Edgar Maddison Welch, fell for the “Pizzagate” conspiracy and acted on it, emphasizing that this should serve as a cautionary example for Christians who believe in right-wing conspiracies.

Trump’s Behavior Conflicts With Christian Teachings

Bailey expressed hope that those who think Trump will save them will awaken to reality before it’s too late. Since 2015, conservative Christians have struggled to let go of their support for Trump despite his behavior conflicting with Christian teachings.

Liberal Talking Points

Moore, whose thoughts prompted Bailey’s piece, believes Trump has contributed to a crisis within Christianity. He recalled instances where pastors quoting Jesus’ teachings were met with skepticism, with the teachings being labeled as “liberal talking points.” The situation indicates a dangerous and dark shift within Christianity.

The Internet Responded

Bailey’s words were shared across the internet and people had a lot to say. One person wrote: “Jesus was a Middle Eastern refugee who abhorred violence and wealth being hoarded by a minority. Trump is a racist xenophobe who promotes violence and hoards wealth. What do you think Jesus would think of Trump if he met him?”

Jesus and Left-Wing Values

Others said Jesus would dislike all right-wingers. “Been saying this for years. It’s not just Trump, though, it’s the right in general. If you’re right-wing and you think you’re Christian, you’re doing something wrong. Left-wing values and Jesus’ teachings are almost synonymous,” one person wrote. “I’ve been saying that for ages too. Nice that people are finally listening,” another replied.

Christianity Is About Love, Not Hate

Plenty of people agreed with the aforementioned commenters. “Jesus would condemn Trump if he could,” one person said. “I really don’t understand how any Trump supporter could consider themselves a Christian. Christianity is supposed to be about love, not hate,” another added.

Some People Disagreed

Some commenters claimed Jesus would approve of Trump. One such individual wrote: “Too many people here clearly aren’t true Christians. If Jesus were here right now, he’d want us to do what’s best for the United States of America. Trump may not be perfect but he’s the best we have.”

The Answers Are in the Bible

Some commenters didn’t understand how any Christian could think Jesus would support Trump. “I feel like most Christians in this country have never actually read the Bible. It’s absolutely astounding that this needs to be said at all,” one person wrote. “Shocking that Christians need to be told this. If you’d read the Bible, you’d know Trump is everything Christianity is against,” another echoed.

A New Opportunity

Others said that Trump is the embodiment of all things good. “Not true. Media’s spreading liberal agendas, as always. God is watching over Trump, the embodiment of all things good, true, and Christian. I truly believe God gifted Trump to our country as a new chance, a fresh opportunity to fix things and make America great again,” one individual said.

A History of Bloodshed

Some people said that Trump aligns with Christianity well – but in an unexpected way. “Actually, I do think it makes sense that Christians support Trump. People try to make it sound like Christianity is wholesome, but, like all organized religions, it’s filled with hatred and a history of bloodshed. Makes sense that right-wingers would like it,” one person wrote.
