“If You Wanna Be Skinny, Get Rid of Your Fat Friends”: TikToker Under Fire for Fatphobic Remarks After Urging Followers to Ditch Fat Friends

A TikToker, known as Karmalita, posted a controversial video urging her followers to ditch their “fat” and “ugly” friends.

The TikToker Didn’t Hold Back

“If you wanna be skinny, get rid of your fat friends,” she says in the clip. “If you wanna be pretty, get rid of your ugly friends.” Karmalita went on to justify the questionable advice: “If you start hanging out with your fat friends too much, it’s gonna be normalized to go get Taco Bell at 2 AM.”

Commenters Weren’t Impressed

“This is high school girl drama,” one person commented, while another advised people not to be shallow and to befriend anyone they want.

Other Viewers Responded in Videos

“It doesn’t matter if someone’s fat or skinny. It matters what type of person they are and that is what your friendship is about,” a TikToker known as Casey said.

Some Viewers Responded With Sarcasm

Setaminata, another creator on the platform, said: “Yes. This is fantastic advice because it’s not as if a lot of pretty women have low self-esteem. And, of course, the only thing that contributes to fat people being fat is eating Taco Bell at 2 AM. Because, of course, having superficial motives to get into relationships and friendships is a good way to go and, of course, skinny people don’t eat.”

Despite Her Poor Delivery, There’s Some Truth to Karmalita’s Words

A 2007 Harvard and UPenn study found that those with an “obese” friend were 57% more likely to become overweight. Morerover, in 2016 a Baylor study found that people were more likely to lose weight if they had thin friends.

It Doesn’t Justify Karmalita’s Video

There’s obviously a lot more to losing weight than hanging out with skinny people. Moreover, fat doesn’t always equal unhealthy. Karmalita was harsh in her video and could’ve done a better job of elaborating on her point.

Karmalita Also Posts on YouTube

Karmalita recently posted a YouTube video titled “LIFE IS BETTER WHEN YOU’RE SKINNY,” where she elaborated on her opinions on fatness. In the video, she talks about her experience of going from “fat” to “slim thick” to “skinny” and explains why she thinks the latter is the best way to be.

She Talked About How Others Treat Her

“When you have a thin body, people assume you’re at a higher socioeconomic status,” she says. Karmalita also explained that she attracts more rich men now she’s thinner.

She Wasn’t Hateful

In the video, Karmalita referred to fat girls as her “big queens.” “The thing is, when you’re really big, men love you. They love fat girls. A lot of them are ashamed to be seen in public with them, unfortunately, my big queens,” she said.

But She Claimed Humans Shouldn’t Eat Three Meals a Day

Somewhat questionably, Karmalita implied it was unhealthy to eat three meals a day. She said: “A lot of people will tell you you’re supposed to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We, as humans, are not meant to be digesting 24/7. That makes you feel bogged down.” Given the prevalence and danger of eating disorders, particularly among young women, Karmalita’s claim was undoubtedly irresponsible.

She Had Some Thoughts About the Culture Surrounding Weight Loss

“Let’s think about Lizzo, for example. All the fat chicks love Lizzo. I love Lizzo. But let’s say Lizzo lost some weight. Not only would she attract a different audience, the fat girls would feel like she’s a sell-out. This is the kind of world we live in,” Karmalita said.

She Talked More About the “Pros” of Being Slim

Karmalita explained that she could go into any store without worrying about whether or not they had her size. She called this “freedom in itself” and “a brick out of a backpack.”

She Associates Thinness With Femininity

The content creator discussed how thin people can “reap the benefits of the skinny people’s stigmas”. She said: “When you think of the word ‘feminine’, you don’t necessarily think ‘big’. You might think ‘curves,’ ‘curvaceous,’ ‘voluptuous,’ ‘hourglassly’ – but you don’t necessarily think ‘big’. ‘Small’ goes with the word ‘feminine’, if that makes sense.”

But the Content Creator Seemed to Contradict Herself

Despite spending most of the video talking about how being thin is the best way to be, Karmalita does list some negatives. She says: “When you’re really skinny and pretty, the fact that you’re a human being never really crosses most people’s minds. They don’t even see you as human anymore; they see you as an entity.”

She Means Well

Despite her questionable opinions, Karmalita clearly means well and wants to share her personal experience. Hopefully, in the future, she can work on her delivery and – perhaps – present some experiences other than her own. Source
