“How Could Anyone Fall for That?”: Young Woman Tricked by Sugar Baby Scam – The Hottest New Con to Hit Social Media

A sugar baby scammer poses as a sugar parent and tricks their victim by proposing a sort of loyalty test whereby they request money before they send more back. A young woman recently fell victim to such a scam on Snapchat and ended up losing quite a bit of money. Thankfully, she didn’t lose as much as most victims do.

How It Happened

The woman received a message from an individual claiming to be looking for a sugar baby. The individual promised to pay the young woman $5,000 after she sent him $30 through Cash App. Unfortunately, the woman was naive and fell for the scammer’s lies.

He Kept Asking For More

The scammer requested more money to release the young woman’s payment – and she obliged. Before long, the payments had stacked up and she’d sent the scammer $225. When the scammer claimed he hadn’t received a payment, the woman realized what was going on. Having never dealt with a scammer before, she turned to her mother for help.

Things Took a Turn for the Worse

Before long, things took a turn for the worse and the scammer began threatening the woman and her family. He went on to claim he had her pictures and personal information. The woman’s mom advised her to call her bank and freeze her account – and she did. The bank issued a new card.

The Internet’s Response

The woman’s story was shared across social media and plenty of people had a lot to say. One person wrote: “I had a male friend who lost $30,000 to a similar scam years ago. The scammer told him he’d won $5,000. They had him send them $30 for processing and it just escalated from there. Unbelievable, I know. I didn’t learn about it until afterward. I don’t understand how anyone could fall for this stuff!”

Others Were Shocked

Plenty of online commenters couldn’t wrap their heads around how the young woman fell for it. One person wrote: “What I don’t understand is when they find out the first money they sent wasn’t enough, why send even more? Does it just not click that [the scammer] supposedly wants to give you money but you are the one who keeps sending money to them? It does blow one’s mind.”

Others Were Familiar With the Scam

A fair few online commenters were familiar with the scam. “I have at least one of those messages in my DMs every day! How could anyone fall for that?” one person wrote. “Someone tried to do this with my daughter right after she turned 18. Thankfully, we’ve always had great communication with each other so when she asked why someone who didn’t know her would want to give her ‘an allowance,’ I knew something wasn’t right. She’s still a little naive with the online stuff but the red flags are starting to get easier to spot on her own.”

Important Life Lessons

Plenty of commenters were happy the woman learned the life lesson at a relatively low cost, at least compared to some scam victims. “She purchased a life lesson and actually got a pretty good deal,” one person wrote. “At least she learned her lesson and didn’t lose too much money in the grand scheme of things,” another said.

Some Commenters Were Sexist

Unfortunately, the woman’s story attracted some sexist comments. “Women are so gullible. It’s actually hilarious. This is why they weren’t allowed bank accounts back in the day,” one individual wrote. “How stupid is she? Never trust your woman with your finances,” another said.

Others Hit Back at the Misogyny

Plenty of other commenters hit back at the sexist remarks. “She was stupid but it’s nothing to do with her gender. Social media didn’t exist when women weren’t allowed bank accounts so I think you’ll find this isn’t the reason why,” one person wrote. “The sexist comments do not pass the vibe check,” another said.

Others Criticized the Woman’s Parents

A fair few commenters criticized the woman’s parents and blamed them for her naivety. “The parents need to reevaluate their parenting technique,” one person wrote. “Everyone’s saying she’s really stupid but I’m out here wondering how her parents brought her up,” another said.

Others Doubted the Story

Some commenters found the story a little too shocking to believe. One individual wrote: “Something doesn’t add up here. There are a lot of stupid people in the world but I don’t see how anyone could fall for this. One payment, sure. But continuous payments? Absolutely no way.”
