Representative Tim Burchett has said that, despite usually disagreeing with her, Nancy Pelosi was “pretty successful” in the speaker role.
We Need Leadership
Speaking to CNN, Burchett said: “We need leadership. We don’t need someone just to say we’ve got 218 votes or whatever that jumps on the train after it leaves the station. We need some people, Speaker Pelosi, for instance.”
A Pretty Successful Tenure
The Tennessee representative continued: “You know, I don’t agree with her ever – hardly on anything – but she was pretty successful in her [tenure] and the way she did it was she put an issue out amongst her caucus.”
A Lot of Work
Elaborating, Burchett said: “She met with them. She figured out what they wanted and then they put it on the floor and they passed it. They rallied around it. A lot of work goes into that. We’re not seeing that. I’m not seeing that work right now and it’s very disappointing to me.”
Rare Compliments From a Republican
In response, the interviewer said Burchett’s comments were “rare compliments from a Republican.” The representative replied: “No, she’s a friend of mine. She has a granddaughter named Isabella and I have a daughter named Isabel. My daughter got hurt real bad last year on a horse and Pelosi is always asking me about her.”
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy
On the subject of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was resented ousted, political scientist Thomas Gift said: “Since the day he earned the speaker’s gavel, Kevin McCarthy has been constantly doubling over backward to keep his unruly caucus together.”

One social media commenter, with nothing but praise for the former speaker, said: “[Pelosi] was a great speaker and she could work together with both sides, unlike the morons in the Republican Party now.”

Another individual said: “She was successful, no question about it. At least the House was working for the American people instead of in disarray like the Republicans are showing us at the moment.”

Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person wrote: “The sort of disarray the Republican Party is in now never occurred under her leadership. Bills were passed and the issues of the country were addressed – not the issues of one man or one party.”
Extremism in the GOP
Another individual said: “Under all previous speakers, including Nancy Pelosi, they passed approximately 94 laws per year. This current House has only passed 19 this year. The Republicans’ handling of the House has been a joke. They will lose the House and it will be their own fault. Extremism is costing the GOP big time.”
