“A New Strain Right as We’re Going Into an Election Is Beyond Suspicious”: Trump Slams the “Fearmongering” Left for COVID-19 Concerns

Donald Trump has voiced some concerns regarding the perception of a new strain of COVID-19. He accused the left of engaging in what he described as “fearmongering.”

In a video shared on social media, Trump expressed his belief that left-wingers are actively pushing for the reinstatement of COVID-19 lockdowns and mandates. He used the sudden emphasis on new virus variants as evidence. “The left-wing lunatics are trying very hard to bring back COVID lockdowns and mandates with all of their sudden fearmongering about the new variants that are coming,” he said.

A Serious Accusation

Simultaneously, he pointed to the impending 2024 election and implied that Democrats are, once again in his eyes, trying to commit election fraud. He said: “They want to restart the COVID hysteria so they can justify more lockdowns, more censorship, more illegal dropboxes, more mail-in boxes, and trillions of dollars in payoffs to their political allies heading into the 2024 election. Does that sound familiar?”

Trump delved further into his concerns about the election process. He argued that he lost the 2020 election unfairly to Joe Biden due to the widespread use of mail-in ballots, a response to the pandemic. He said: “They rigged the 2020 election and now they’re trying to do the same thing all over again by rigging the most important election in the history of our country, the 2024 election, even if it means trying to bring back COVID.”

The Political Implications

Trump undoubtedly perceives COVID-19 concerns as a tool that his opponents are using to advance their own agendas. Moreover, his assertions about censorship, mail-in voting, and payoffs to political allies convey how much he’s willing to lie to gain power. It’s unclear how the former president explains the COVID-19 responses by other nations.

Trump’s Likely Motivations

Trump’s critique of COVID-19 concerns is undoubtedly an attempt to convince Americans of his lies about the 2020 election. The former president likely hopes that by pointing out the coincidental timing of a new strain, he’ll be able to win over those who aren’t sure where they stand.

Experts Are Right to Be Cautious

News of Trump’s words was shared across social media. While opinions were divided, most people were critical of his comments. “Those claims are baseless and dangerous, not that I’d expect anything less. He knows exactly what he’s doing. COVID is a real threat and it’s not gone yet. Experts are right to be cautious,” one person said.

Trump’s Supporters Agreed With His Claims

Despite the criticism, Trump’s supporters agreed with his claims. “He speaks the truth as always. You really can’t deny it here. A new strain right as we’re going into an election is beyond suspicious,” one person said. “I see nothing but the truth here,” another echoed.

No One Will Believe This

Others claimed no one would believe the former president. “No one will believe this. Trump’s known for playing the victim card and spreading misinformation. It’s ridiculous that he thinks anyone will believe his lies,” one person said. “The sad part is, some people will,” another replied.

Trump’s Mishandling of the Pandemic

Some people recounted Trump’s mishandling of the pandemic. “His track record is useless on this topic. He said there would only be 15 cases and [COVID] would be gone by March of 2020. His handling of COVID, which nearly killed him, should immediately disqualify him from any input on how to handle it,” one person said.

Left vs. Right

Others expressed confusion. “Literally only the right [is] talking about this. The rationale left will take precautions if needed but only the right is panicking,” one person said. “I’m confused. I’ve only seen Republicans talking about this new strain,” another echoed.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect

Some people tried to explain Trump’s behavior and one person posted an image. It read: “The Dunning-Kruger effect – a type of cognitive bias where people with little expertise or ability assume they have superior expertise or ability. This overestimation occurs as a result of the fact that they don’t have enough knowledge to know they don’t have enough knowledge.”

Listen to Scientists

Others argued about whether or not lockdowns work. “Well lockdowns didn’t do anything to help COVID last time, so I don’t imagine they’ll help this time,” one person said. “Lockdowns do work. The reason they didn’t work too well before was because the government didn’t act until it was already too late. Please, listen to scientists,” another hit back.

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
