Jenna Ellis, a former lawyer of Trump, has pleaded guilty in the Georgia election case.
Sound Moral and Ethical Character
Ellis cried as she read: “As an attorney who is also a Christian, I take my responsibilities as a lawyer very seriously and I endeavor to be a person of sound moral and ethical character in all of my dealings.”
Four Criminal Indictments
Across the United States, Donald Trump is facing 91 criminal charges and four indictments. Ellis’ guilty plea follows those of Sidney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro, and Scott Hall. The former president’s spokesperson has said he’s “confused” by the pleas.
Mark Meadows and Rudi Giuliani
The attention is now on former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Mayor of New York City Rudi Giuliani. Ellis blamed higher-ups like Giuliani for her actions. “I relied on others, including lawyers with many more years of experience than I, to provide me with true and reliable information – especially since my role involved speaking to the media and to legislators in various states,” she said.
Failing To Do Due Diligence
Ellis continued: “What I did not do, but should have done, was to make sure that the facts the other lawyers alleged to be true were in fact true. In the frenetic pace of attempting to raise challenges to the election in several states, including Georgia, I failed to do my due diligence. I believe in and I value election integrity. If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges.”
Mark Meadows’ Immunity Deal
Mark Meadows reportedly has an immunity deal. According to federal prosecutor Kristy Greenberg, this means that nothing he says to prosecutors can be used against him. According to GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie, this will make things “much tougher” for Trump.
Fani Willis Wants Cooperation
Fani Willis, who is leading the Georgia prosecution, is evidently trying to send a message to other co-defendants. She’s showing them that she isn’t interested in handing out maximum penalties. Instead, she simply wants their cooperation.
An Apology to Georgia
Ellis concluded her statement by apologizing to the people of Georgia: “I look back on this whole experience with deep remorse for those failures of mine. I have taken responsibility already before the Colorado bar who censured me – and I now take responsibility before this court and apologize to the people of Georgia. Thank you.”
The Internet’s Response
News of Ellis’ guilty plea was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to give their opinions on the matter. For the most part, people didn’t believe that she was remorseful and many felt her punishment was too light.
A Relaxed Punishment
One social media commenter said: “A $5,000 fine, 100 hours of community service, five years of probation, and an apology letter to the people of Georgia. Not bad for trying to overthrow the government.”
Gambled and Lost
Lots of people didn’t buy into Ellis’ “remorse.” One person wrote: “Deep remorse that her side did not prevail, otherwise she’d be living it up large. Yeah, gambled and lost. I’m sure all of us would like to have known then what we know now. Shut up.”
A Crocodile Teared Confession
Others suggested that Ellis’ tears were fake: “She went from her crocodile teared confession to smiling brilliantly again while being questioned about whether she understood what pleading guilty meant. Total non-genuine acting!”
No Real Remorse
Echoing the aforementioned commenters, another individual wrote: “None of these former Trump supporters, turned closeted Trump supporters, have any real remorse. They only feel bad because they got caught.”
Set for Life
Others speculated about Ellis’ motivations: “She was likely told by those old men that if she did what they said, she’d be set for life. She knew what she was doing was wrong. She just hoped she wouldn’t get caught.”
A Bizarre Mugshot
Some people referenced Ellis’ unconventional mugshot. “She didn’t look so remorseful when she was grinning ear to ear in her mugshot from a few months ago,” one individual said. “Not as confident as you were while your mugshot was being taken then?” another echoed.
What the Court Wants To Hear
One person said Ellis’ whole speech was designed to make her seem as innocent as possible, despite the guilty plea: “Yeah if you think she actually now believes in election integrity… you are extremely naive. She is just saying what she thinks the court wants to hear to get the lightest sentence possible.”
The Orange Garbage Stain
Others looked forward to potentially seeing Trump in prison: “Well, she won’t rot in prison as per her plea deal. But we can at least hope that the orange garbage stain at the top of this pyramid does. Three of his former lawyers have flipped so far and the fact that none are getting jail time tells me their testimony will be worth it.”
A Hypothetical Conversation
One person imagined a conversation between Ellis and her lawyers: “Her lawyers sat her down and told her, ‘You are going to end up in jail. You have nothing to defend yourself with against these charges. They have the evidence and you now have a choice. Flip against Trump and the rest and testify against them or sit in prison for years.’ And she decided that a plea deal was better for her.”
Ban Ellis From Practicing Law
Quite a few commenters called for Ellis to be banned from practicing law. One such individual said: “I remember a case in ethics class where an attorney was censured and had their license suspended for having too many speeding tickets because it showed that they had a lack of respect for the rule of law. So apply proportionally that here.”
