“They’re Gonna Lose This Because the Entire Family Is Criminal”: Nehls Takes a Spat on the Biden Admin While Commending Johnson for House GOP

“If it hadn’t been Donald Trump, I’d have definitely nominated Mike Johnson,” said Congressman Troy E. Nehls in a Fox News interview.

Congressman Mike Johnson (LA-04) was chosen to be the next Speaker of the House on October 25, 2023. Speaker Johnson is a congressman from Louisiana’s northwest and western districts. Speaker Johnson practiced law and was a member of the Louisiana State Legislature from 2015 until his election to Congress in 2016.

This week, while addressing reporters at a New York courtroom where he is being tried for civil fraud, Donald Trump asserted that he was responsible for Mike Johnson’s election as Speaker of the House of Representatives. “This time yesterday, nobody was thinking of Mike,” remarked the former US president. “Then we put out the word and now he is the Speaker of the House.”

Some believed that Trump had overstated his contribution to the elevation of an obscure Louisiana senator and devoted supporter to the position of presiding officer of the lower house of Congress and second in the presidential succession behind the vice president.

Johnson Among the Chief Congressional Architects of Trump’s 2020 Election Fiasco

Johnson was one of the main legislative architects of Trump’s effort to reverse the 2020 presidential election results, but his election still highlights his continued power on Capitol Hill, especially as he looks to win another four years in office. Trump is leading the race to be the party’s nominee for president in 2024, despite his growing legal problems and the fact that many people hold him responsible for the Republicans’ dismal performance in the previous year’s midterm elections.

“If You Don’t Have His Seal of Approval, You Are Not Going to Go Very Far”: Trump Seems to Call the Shots at Capitol Hill

Republican strategist Ford O’Connell, headquartered in Florida, stated that Donald Trump is the party’s leader “both from a messaging and policy standpoint.” “If you are on Capitol Hill, and you don’t have his seal of approval, you are not going to go very far.”

Johnson Goes the Distance to Gain Trump’s Loyalty

After nearly a month of Republican infighting, Johnson was elected. After three colleagues failed to unify the party behind their respective campaigns for Speaker, the congressman from Louisiana became the fourth contender in less than four weeks. Despite keeping a lower profile than many of his colleagues, Johnson is a devout conservative evangelical Christian who opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. He has often demonstrated his loyalty to Trump.

After the 2020 presidential election, he signed an amicus brief with more than 100 House Republican colleagues in favor of a lawsuit that attempted to overturn the election results in four swing states. He was a part of Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment hearing. The former president abstained from the Speaker’s race earlier this month as Matt Gaetz, a fiery Republican congressman from Florida and a devoted Trump supporter, spearheaded an uprising to remove Kevin McCarthy, whom Trump had long referred to as “my Kevin.”

Shortly after McCarthy was removed, however, Trump voiced his opinions, initially teasing the idea that he ought to succeed him as Speaker and then making it clear that his only objective was to run for president once more. Rather, he backed Jim Jordan, the fiery chair of the House judiciary committee and former wrestling coach who has been one of Trump’s most vocal advocates on Capitol Hill for a long time.

Scalise Withdraws Candidacy Due to ‘Very Serious Form of Cancer’

Although House Majority Leader Steve Scalise emerged victorious in a secret ballot among Republicans in the chamber, Scalise withdrew his candidacy just hours after Trump expressed worries to a Fox News interviewer over Scalise’s health. The lawmaker is receiving medical attention for hematologic cancer. “He’s got a very serious form of cancer.” At the time, Trump stated, “And, you know, most importantly, I want Steve to get well. I just don’t know how you can do the job when you have—that’s a serious problem.”

And while Jordan’s fervent support was insufficient to win him the seat in the House—the polarizing congressman from Ohio had to concede defeat in three agonizing public votes before announcing his resignation—Trump was able to demonstrate his political prowess by undermining the hopes of Tom Emmer, the third Republican candidate for Speaker.

Johnson’s Success May Only Be Due to House Members’ Exhaustion

Numerous Republicans on Capitol Hill concede that Johnson’s achievements may be partially ascribed to members’ exhaustion from the internal conflict and the mounting external pressure to take action on matters of utmost significance both domestically and internationally. Among them is a plan from the White House to provide Israel with billions more in aid while it fights Hamas.

However, a lot of people in Washington also believe that the composed Louisianan had the appropriate temperament to win over other Republicans who were turned off by Jordan’s more combative approach. “Without Trump’s backing, you were not going to be elected Speaker. “You needed his backing, but you also needed a little extra,” remarked O’Connell, characterizing Johnson as “Jim Jordan, but with a blazer on.”

Johnson Cries ‘Next Question’ When Asked About Role in 2020 Election Disaster

Democrats, who have already voiced concerns about what the next Speaker would do if the former president questioned the results of the 2024 election if he gets the Republican party nominee, have little patience with Johnson due to his unwavering devotion to Trump. The Speaker has evaded inquiries over his involvement in attempts to rig the 2020 election, once simply saying, “next question,” to a reporter who brought up the issue this week on Capitol Hill.

However, Johnson reaffirmed on Thursday that he “respected” the president’s office, telling Fox News that he had “no problem” with Biden as an “individual” during a 20-minute encounter. “You respect the office. It is a biblical admonition that you give honour where honour is due,” Johnson stated. “But he and I agree on almost no policy . . . I think it’s been a failed presidency.”

Biden ‘Not Worried’ About Possibility of Johnson Rigging 2024 Election

Earlier this week, Biden expressed to reporters his lack of fear regarding Johnson or any other Republican attempting to revoke the results of the 2024 election. “Look, just like I was not worried that the last guy would be able to overturn the election,” Biden remarked. “I understand the Constitution.”

“I voted in support of my friend and colleague, Mike Johnson, for Speaker of the House,” stated Congressman Nehls. “Through our work on the House Judiciary Committee, I know firsthand that Mike is a strong, principled conservative who will lead the House through passing the 8 remaining appropriations bills, continue the much-needed investigations into the Biden Crime Family, and secure wins for the American people. I look forward to continuing fighting for TX-22 and working alongside my colleagues to reduce federal spending, secure our nation’s borders, and put America FIRST. Let’s get to work.”
