“He’ll Help People Realize How Insane the GOP Is”: Jimmy Kimmel Slams House Speaker Mike Johnson for Anti-LGBTQ+ Views

Like many people, Jimmy Kimmel is seemingly horrified by new House Speaker Mike Johnson’s abhorrent views.

Anti-Gay and Anti-Choice

Kimmel talked about how Johnson backed criminal defendant Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election. “Also anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-conspiracy theory… he seems terrific. Not only is he not the best choice for speaker, you can’t even definitively say Mike Johnson is the best Mike Johnson they could’ve chosen,” he said.

Any Other Mike Johnson

Kimmel went on to list various other relatively high-profile Mike Johnsons, including chefs and athletes. “You could go to the middle of the phone book and pick any of the hundreds of Mike Johnsons, each one would be a better choice for speaker because not one of them tried to overthrow the presidential election,” he said.

A Delusional Man

Johnson hasn’t been shy to voice controversial opinions in the past. He’s been associated with an evangelical movement known as “young Earth creationism.” Individuals who subscribe to this ideology believe that Genesis is an accurate historical text and that the Earth is 6,000 years old.

A False History

Johnson believes that children should be taught creationism over evolution in school. He even went as far as to describe teaching the latter as “government abuse.” Moreover, he once endorsed a museum that sought to teach children that humans walked the Earth with dinosaurs.

Johnson’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Views

The now-speaker has also been incredibly open about his anti-LGBTQ+ views. He once claimed that homosexuality was a “dark harbinger of chaos and sexual anarchy.” He called it “inherently unnatural” and said that queer people shouldn’t be protected by anti-discrimination laws because being LGBTQ+ is a choice. In the same sentence, he claimed that religion should be protected by such laws because it’s “what you are.”

It Gets Worse

Perhaps even more concerningly, Johnson once worked for a law firm that advocated for making homosexuality illegal and sterilizing transgender people. In regard to Lawrence v. Texas, a U.S. Supreme Court decision that found banning consenting adults from engaging in same-gender sexual activity unconstitutional, Johnson said:  “Make no mistake, the Lawrence decision opens the door to the undermining of many important laws and is ultimately a strategic first shot for the homosexual lobby’s ultimate prize.”

A Terrible Sign

Given all of this, it’s easy to see why Kimmel and so many others are concerned. As speaker, Johnson is second in the line of succession to the presidency – right behind Vice President Kamala Harris. With concerns about Christian nationalism and theocracy rising, Johnson’s appointment to the role is a terrible sign to many.

The Public Opinion

Over the past few days, Johnson’s views have been discussed across the internet in great detail. For the most part, social media users seem to be horrified by his past and scared to think about the future.

Separation of Church and State

One commenter said: “Mike thinks God ordained to put him there in the House of Representatives to fight the MAGA war against the American people. This is a perfect example of why we, the people, need separation of church and state.”

A Standard-Issue Christofascist

Another person wrote:  “So a standard-issue Christofascist is now second in line to the U.S. presidency at a time when his colleagues aren’t shy about using violence to achieve their political ends? Cool, cool.”

A Dangerous Ability

Others warned that Johnson could genuinely be dangerous: “He scared me during a lot of the impeachment hearings because he made completely [insane] takes sound logical and was able to speak articulately. He left the shouting and grandstanding to Collins and Jordan.”

An Election-Denying Politician

Another person said: “These are the MAGA Republican ‘Christians’ – the toxic combination of politics and religion, where you hear Bible verses quoted on the floor of the House as they support an election-denying politician.”

A Hypocritical Cult

The commenter continued: “These are the Republicans who criminalize freedoms, ban books, try to overturn elections, have a cult following of an indicted felon, sweep under the rug a violent attack on our Capitol, and then give speeches on the House floor, talking about kneeling down in prayer while quoting Bible verses. This is the Republican Party. It is extreme. It is hypocritical. It is a cult.”

A Planner of the Failed Coup

Another individual wrote: “This guy was one of the planners of the failed coup. The fact that the House GOP requires its leadership to be 100% on board with election denial and coup attempts should be the only story right now. The rest is a distraction.”

Disgusting, Awful People

Others criticized Republicans in general: “Can we stop pretending there are any good Republicans in Congress? They voted for this guy to be speaker. Come to terms with the fact that a good portion of this country are disgusting, awful people – and don’t try to cover for them by ‘both sides-ing’ this.”

The Losing End of a Cultural Battle

Another person said: “He can be anti-LGBTQ but the reality is that a majority of Americans support gay rights – and an even larger majority of younger adults support gay rights. The GOP is on the losing end of this cultural battle. Their cultural wars are no longer sustainable. They will die out, just like their antiquated ideas.”

A Polite Demeanor

Plenty of people described Johnson as “dangerous.” One such commenter wrote: “This guy really is just as rabid and awful as the rest of the GOP and, frankly, he’s more dangerous because he puts a polite demeanor and a smile on when he does it. Makes me want to barf.”

The Importance of Voting

Others urged people to vote: “This guy is terrifying, frankly. One certainty – people have no excuse not to make a sincere effort to vote, no matter how many hurdles are placed in the way. We cannot afford apathy.”

A Tough Sell

Some people weren’t as concerned. “I hope this makes right-leaning independents realize that they’re way closer to the Democrats than the Republicans now. I think it will. This could be good. He’ll help people realize how insane the GOP is,” one individual wrote.
