“Democrats Are Corrupt and Incompetent”: Trump’s Support in New York Skyrockets in Unexpected Turn

Former President Donald Trump is demonstrating unexpected popularity in New York’s political landscape. Since 2020, the margin between him and current President Joe Biden has significantly tightened. This development hints at a shifting political climate in the traditionally blue state of New York.

Recent Poll Findings

The Siena Research Institute, part of Siena College in Loudonville, New York, recently released a poll. Their data highlighted that Trump is now behind Biden by a mere 9 percentage points. This marks a significant change from the previous month’s 21-point difference and suggests that Trump is gaining popularity in the area.

Although he is still in the lead, Biden appears to be losing his stronghold in the state. This shift appears to suggest that Trump’s New York base is strengthening. Additionally, these results also indicated that President Biden is facing a lack of trust in his audience. Many critics have compared these results to early polls during the 2020 election.

The Exact Numbers

Based on a detailed study conducted between October 15 and 19, involving 1,225 registered New York voters, Biden is currently ahead of Trump 46% to 37%. Steven Greenberg from Siena College commented on these results, saying, “Right now, Biden has his worst-ever New York favorability and job approval ratings.”

Democratic Discontent

However, as Greenberg said, “The bad news is there’s more bad news.” This is not the only unrest the Democratic party in New York is experiencing. A significant 52% of its members have expressed the desire for a presidential nominee different from Biden. This statistic reflects a potential crack in the unity of the party.

Adding More Names to the Ballot

In a complex four-way matchup, Biden’s advantage over Trump has dwindled to a mere 7 percent. While Biden and Trump remain the main contenders, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cornell West have appeared as potential competitors. They have received 13 percent and 5 percent of the New York votes, respectively. Clearly, there are diverse voter interests.

The Third-Party Factor

Kennedy, initially in the Democratic camp, has moved to an independent stance, while Cornell West made headlines with his exit from the Green Party. These significant moves by both figures shake up the 2024 race predictions. They have introduced unpredictability and potential shifts in voter support, changing the traditional two-party dominance.

New York’s Historical Stance

Historically, New York has been a stronghold for Democrats, with its voters leaning heavily blue. This trend has persisted since Ronald Reagan’s time. Currently, he stands as the last Republican who managed to sway the majority in 1984. As such, the current polling trends are quite surprising, given the state’s consistent past.

The Expert’s Opinion

Greenberg shed some light on the evolving political climate. He remarks, “Is New York still ‘true blue?’ True, 49 percent of voters are enrolled as Democrats and only 23 percent as Republicans.” However, he commented on recent shifts, such as that “just last year, a Republican came within seven points of being elected governor.”

Is It All Bad for Biden?

Biden’s diminishing ratings cast shadows over his prospects, even though the election day remains distant. This consistent bad news has dampened the mood of many Democrats. The journey to the election seems full of challenges and uncertainties. Despite the challenges, there is still a possibility for Biden to be victorious.

The Root of the Concern

52% of New York voters believe that the state is on the wrong track, and they raised alarms about the state’s direction. Migrant issues have dominated recent headlines, escalating concerns among residents. As Steven Greenberg points out, 57% now view it as a “very serious” problem. This is a slight increase from 54% in August.

Additionally, the migrant situation in New York has reached a point where 64 percent of New Yorkers feel that the state has done enough. These people believe the state needs to slow down its acceptance of new migrants. Mayor Eric Adams has voiced his concerns, stating the migrant issue “will destroy New York City,” with 58% of voters sharing this view.

The Common Concern

The state’s changing political climate is evident in the shared concerns among its diverse populace. Greenberg emphasized this, saying, “Seldom do we see an issue where at least 79 percent of Democrats, Republicans, independents, men, women […] all agree—that the migrant influx is a serious problem.”

Trump’s Favorability

Despite Trump’s growing momentum in New York, there’s still significant resistance. As per the latest polls, 59% of New Yorkers continue to view the former president unfavorably. While the shift indicates a changing political landscape, it’s clear that Trump’s challenges in winning over the entirety of New York’s hearts remain.

Questioning the Republican Choice

One reaction to the shifting dynamics in New York reads, “I will never understand why people vote Republican they don’t even hide the fact that they don’t care about American Citizens.” Another person agreed, saying, “Congrats, Centrists, you cost us seats and the House. As always, when choosing between a centrist Republican and a centrist Democrat, the centrist Republican always wins.”

Policy Impact on NYC Elections

As another voter points out, “Democrats are going to lose more seats in NYC over policies, too. A lot of unpopular things with centralists around schools (elementary G&T basically destroyed) and crime have translated to lost seats.” It appears that policy issues have directly influenced voter preferences in the state.

Questions About Democratic Leadership

There’s a growing concern about the Democratic establishment in New York. “NY establishment Democrats are so incredibly corrupt and incompetent. Good thing one of them is the next leader in the House,” says one commentator. Similarly, another resident said, “Democrats don’t usually show up during the midterms historically, and in a blue state like NY, there wasn’t a driving force to bring them out to the polls.”

NY’s Political Dichotomy

New York’s political landscape might be more complex than it appears. A commentator mentions, “NY is very red outside of the cities. The Dems were just too dumb to gerrymander away the competitive seats.” This suggests that urban and rural divides play a significant role in shaping the state’s politics.

The SALT Deduction Cap’s Impact

The Democratic Party’s decisions at the federal level also seem to be influencing state politics. A concerned voter pointed out, “That was expected after the Democratic Party failed to overturn Trump’s SALT deduction cap when they got into power in 2020. If the Democratic Party isn’t going to protect the state’s interest, then there is less reason for the state to remain as deep blue as it had been in recent years.”
