Given Biden’s diagnosis of “significant spinal arthritis,” his campaign team has been trying very hard to ensure his public appearances run smoothly. The diagnosis was confirmed earlier in the year and it led to several changes in the president’s routine.
Tennis Shoes and Physical Therapy
The most notable change since the diagnosis is that Biden now often wears tennis shoes, seemingly aiming to prevent any falls or other problems that could negatively affect his public image. He also attends physical therapy with Drew Contreras, who also worked with Obama.
A Concerning Fall
Biden was first seen in tennis shoes shortly after a fall at the Air Force Academy in the summer. Notably, he now boards Air Force One using shorter stairs, clearly aimed at making it more accessible to him.
Health Scares and Presidential Campaigns
Health scares have historically had a severe effect on presidential campaigns. As such, it’s not surprising that Biden’s team wants to minimize public falls – especially given the fact that he already receives a lot of age-related criticism.
Dissatisfaction With Biden
In the summer, a poll suggested that 77% of Americans believed Biden is too old for another term. Of Republicans, 89% agreed. Of Democrats, 69% agreed. A more recent poll revealed that three out of five Democrats would favor another nominee over Biden.
Biden’s Very Real Achievements
In response to the increased media scrutiny of Biden’s health, Andrew Bates – a White House spokesperson – said: “This article fits an unfortunate pattern of the media attempting to sensationalize something that has long been public, rather than covering the president’s very real achievements for hard-working Americans.”
The Public Opinion
Biden’s health is something that has been discussed and debated in detail in recent months. One social media commenter said: “Just put him in a wheelchair. We’ve had a president in a wheelchair before. I don’t care if he falls. I care that he’s running this country effectively.”
A Lack of Honest Politicians
Another person wrote: “They are trying to dupe the American people into thinking Biden’s age isn’t a problem but covering something up says they know it is. Not one politician or [person] working for them is honest and moral.”

Others said concerns about democracy were more important than concerns about age: “All of America needs to agree on the biggest decision of the 21st century. Another commenter wrote: “The physical ailments do not bother me nearly as much as the cognitive ones. Especially now that the world is in a crisis situation. Biden will likely misstate something and we will be lucky to live through it.”
Strong and Respected
Plenty of people called for younger presidential candidates. One such individual said: “His health problems are a huge concern. At 80, with physical and mental disabilities, he is unfit and unable to lead this country. We need candidates that are younger, more capable, not criminals, and who are willing to work with both sides to see America become as strong and respected as it once was.”
Younger but Not Harris
Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person wrote: “Arguably one of the greatest presidents this country has ever had governed from a wheelchair. Having said that, Biden should step aside for a younger candidate. And not Harris!”
On to Civilian Life
Some people criticized Biden while also making it clear that they’d never vote for the current GOP: “I would never vote for any of these far-right Republicans but I do not understand why an 80-year-old does not know it’s time for him to go on to civilian life. What’s wrong with him?”
Wake Up, America
Others criticized both Biden and Trump: “I can’t believe our likely 2024 candidates are going to be two old guys, one who is clearly becoming physically incapable of the job and one who is so perverse in his ethics that he lies without blinking, appears to enjoy furthering the divide in America and making it the weakest it’s been since the Civil War, and has been accused of sharing top secret information with people from other countries. Seriously, America. Wake up. There have got to be better options. Enough of voting for the lesser evil.”
A Strong Commander
Another commenter wrote: “Take some time and go to a nursing home and have a conversation with some of those people aged 84. This is the kind of President we would have if Biden was reelected. We need a strong commander and chief in office to manage all the global threats that humanity is facing at this moment in time.”
Lunatics From the GOP
One person questioned why so few politicians appear to be sane. They said: “Why is it that this country cannot attract really smart, energetic individuals to run our country? We seem to get the senile Democrats or the lunatics from the GOP. Why is that?”
Biden vs. Trump
Others said Biden is likely the country’s best option: “Okay but why is everyone so focused on Biden’s ability to lead when the alternative is a literal criminal who can’t even speak his native language properly? I get that Biden is a bad option but come on. Trump is so much worse.”

Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person said: “In an ideal world, I’d like someone like Bernie but younger. I can’t have that though and there’s no way I’m voting for the fascist GOP. Biden sucks but he’s our best hope. At least he’s not Trump-level insane.”
