According to a poll released by Emerson College, criminal defendant Donald Trump’s popularity among young people has grown.
Trump vs. Biden
Since last month, Trump’s support among young voters has increased by two percentage points. Perhaps even more interestingly, Trump won in a match-up with President Biden by the same amount.
A Further Question
Poll participants were also asked about their opinions regarding the impact of President Biden’s policies, compared to those of Trump, on the safety of the United States. The results revealed that 43% of respondents believed that Biden’s policies made the U.S. less secure, while 41% felt they enhanced the nation’s safety.
The Most Pressing Issue
When it came to what voters considered the most pressing issue in the country, the economy held the top spot with 35% of respondents indicating such – a five-point decrease since the previous month.
The Runners Up
In contrast, immigration had a six-point increase from 10% to 16%, making it the second most important issue for voters. Following these were concerns related to “threats to democracy” at 13%, healthcare at 9%, crime at 8%, and education at 7%.
Concern Over Immigration
Matt Taglia, Senior Director of Emerson College Polling, said: “While concern over immigration has grown across all regions of the country since September, Northeastern voters rank the issue highest, with 19% naming it the most important issue facing the country. Among all voters who say immigration is their top issue, 79% plan to support Trump in the presidential election and just 14% support Biden.”
A Hypothetical Race
As more and more polls are released, it’s clear that the 2024 presidential election, as of right now, is unpredictable. Plenty of polls have looked into a hypothetical Biden vs. Trump race and they’ve all produced different results.
A Nationwide Poll
A nationwide poll recently showed Biden beating Trump by four points and he held the same lead in a different poll released the next day. In the Republican primary, Trump currently holds a 59% lead. A poll from the summer showed the criminal defendant beating Ron DeSantis by over 20 points.
The Internet’s Response
News of the new poll was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to give their views. For the most part, people doubted its results. One person said: “This poll is wrong. I just spent the weekend at my daughter’s college. I met so many young people. They are overwhelmingly liberal and will vote that way.”
Don’t Take This Seriously
Another commenter claimed that Emerson College’s polling methods mean their results tend to favor Republicans: “Emerson always skews Republican because of their polling methods. So don’t take this seriously.”
Achieving Political Gain
“All polls are misleading. They are tiny samples that do not reflect the real views of Americans. Anyone can conduct a poll, manipulate the data, and report fake results in order to achieve political gain,” another person wrote.
Lying in Polls
Others claimed that people intentionally lie in polls: “Polls mean nothing because people don’t always tell you the truth. Trump was way ahead in the polls back in 2020 and look what happened. Don’t become complacent.”
Climate Change and Gun Control
Plenty of people were very quick to dismiss the poll. “The youth of today are smarter than the old MAGAs who follow a criminal. They will never vote for a man who is against climate change action and gun control,” one person said.
No Poll Can Be Trusted
Others said that no poll can be trusted: “Polls are for fools who will believe anything. Polls are skewed to the writers’ leanings and beliefs. The proof will be seen in the election and hopefully Republicans lose so big that they end up with no power.”
The Contrast in Polls
Some people addressed the varying poll results. One individual wrote: “The constant reporting of polls is an interesting pattern to see in U.S. media. It’s not opinion polls that determine the outcome of elections, it’s votes in ballot boxes.”
Polls Are Useless
Others said it was far too soon for polls. “Polls are useless at this point. They always go back and forth a year out from the election. Let’s see what they say in September of next year,” one individual wrote.
Complete and Utter Nonsense
Another commenter said: “This is complete nonsense. Trump and Republican policies have nothing for young voters. The only people who could actually believe and put any value in this poll are MAGA lunatics. They can be told anything and they believe it. The polls have been off so badly for the last three election cycles and seem to get worse instead of better.”
Clinton in 2016
Others pointed to the 2016 polls as proof of their inaccuracy: “All surveys and polls showed Hillary winning in 2016. Now, all surveys and polls show Trump winning in 2024. Surveys and polls suck and are, as of late, highly inaccurate. Who’s taking these things?”
Polls Are Irrelevant
Echoing the aforementioned commenter, another person said: “Polls are becoming more and more irrelevant. These days, polls are more often wrong than right no matter when the polls are taken, who’s doing the polling, or who’s being polled.”
