“Democrats, Physicians, Mothers Conspire Together to Execute Infants”: Trump Tries to Solidify His Pro-life Bona Fides

Former President Donald Trump sought to reaffirm his pro-life credentials during his campaign in Iowa after recent GOP concerns about Trump’s conservative stance on the matter surfaced.

In his speech to the Iowa crowd, Trump relayed a tale about surgeons killing fully developed, born kids. According to Trump’s narrative, if a woman “doesn’t want the baby” after the baby is born, Democrats, doctors, and moms work together to “execute” certain newborn children.

If the kid was born after the ninth month, Trump advises setting it away. If the mother doesn’t want the kid, you talk to her, and we have the infant put to death. They do things like this. Boos from the audience were aimed not towards Trump but rather at individuals who were supposedly involved in the murderous action Trump depicted in his account of a newborn being executed.

“No Such Thing as Abortion After Birth”

With this statement widely displayed on X, those wanting to clear up the situation were evident everywhere in the comments, if not in the audience- “There is no such thing as abortion after birth. Third-trimester abortions happen when the fetus can not survive outside the womb OR the mother’s life is at stake.

Why Is Trump Promoting the False Myth About Infanticide After Birth?

Even if his Supreme Court nominations helped overturn Roe v. Wade, the fallout from his history as a pro-choice supporter and his Republican reality check about whether the abortion issue is a winning electoral issue make him vulnerable on the far-right.

Trump Paints Pro-choice Advocates as Criminals

Trump isn’t talking about 5-week bans and other such restrictions, giving himself the opportunity to maintain broader national appeal on the abortion issue than his more extreme rivals. More sinisterly, he paints pro-choice supporters as violent criminals with a fondness for infanticide by accusing them of the cruel death of newborns.

“Trump’s Comments Serve as Avenue for Pro-lifers to Find Support”: Abby Johnson

Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood employee who is now a prominent opponent of abortion, told the Washington Post that “any candidate who is truly pro-life should be able to vow to sign any pro-life legislation that comes across their desk” in response to Trump’s recent assertion that the GOP’s abortion positions could harm the party politically. Pro-lifers can now select a different candidate to back as a result of President Trump’s disappointing remarks.

Very Few U.S. Babies Born Alive Due to Failed Abortion

According to federal records, extremely few live births in the United States are the result of aborted pregnancies. Infants delivered alive following attempted abortions were involved in 143 fatalities, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 2003 and 2014.

Existing Laws Already Provide Protection to Healthy Newborns

This year, pro-life lawmakers and activists have pushed for state and federal legislation that would make it illegal for doctors to neglect to treat newborns who are born alive following a botched abortion. Organizations that represent obstetricians and gynecologists claim the current legal framework already protects every healthy infant, regardless of whether it was born as the result of a successful abortion or under other circumstances.

“Would Never Do Anything to Hasten Passing of Infant”

According to Salt Lake City-based maternal fetal medicine specialist Dr. Cara Heuser, “We would never do anything to actively hasten the passing of the infant.” She and other medical professionals claim that the language emanating from Trump and anti-abortion groups does not accurately reflect the difficult reasons behind the majority of late-term abortions. Only 1.3% of abortions, according to the CDC, occur after 21 weeks, and they frequently include serious fetal malformations or maternally dangerous circumstances.

“Medical Standard Is to Give Hospice Type Care”

“The medical standard is to give hospice type care, not futile medical interventions, when the baby has a terminal diagnosis with no chance of surviving,” said Dr. Diane Horvath, an obstetrician-gynecologist with a practice in Baltimore. “This is a very personal choice that allows families to adhere to their own religious traditions and beliefs.” Horvath is the medical director of Whole Woman’s Health and a fellow of Physicians for Reproductive Health. Whole Woman’s Health runs abortion facilities throughout numerous states.

Lack of Medical Intervention Considered Criminal

In a recent online blog, anti-abortion group Operation Rescue’s Cheryl Sullinger stated that when medical help is not provided, it may be considered illegal. “If abortionists do not supply medical care for premature babies that survive abortions, their intent is for the baby to die, even if he or she might be saved with a little medical assistance,” she remarked. “This is to actually kill the baby through a crime of omission.”

“Goal Is to Make the Newborn as Comfortable as Possible”

Heuser said that in these situations, medical intervention is frequently determined to be not only ineffective over the long term but also to worsen the suffering a newborn is experiencing. She said that comfort care for the infant included providing food, oxygen, painkillers, and skin-to-skin contact. “Everyone’s goal is to make the newborn as comfortable as possible, to respect the time the family has with their child, and to avoid interventions that would cause additional suffering without changing the outcome.”

Wealthy Women Traveled to Other States With Less-Stringent Laws

Every state has a different set of laws governing these situations. Even in circumstances of serious fetal defects, late-term abortions are prohibited in several states for women whose health is not in jeopardy. “Those mothers would be forced to carry a baby to term that they know is going to die,” said Heuser, citing instances in which women who had the means to do so have left their state for one with less onerous regulations.

Anti-abortion Activists Cite Gosnell Case

In the past, pro-lifers have frequently used the instance of Kermit Gosnell, a physician from Philadelphia, to delegitimize other abortionists nationwide. Advocates for abortion rights claim that the Gosnell case demonstrates their claim that the legislation as it is now is sufficient. He carried out extraordinarily late-term abortions, and when the babies were delivered alive, he severed their spines. He was found guilty of murder in 2013 and given a life sentence without the possibility of release.

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
