“If Trump is the Nominee, I Won’t Be a Republican”: Liz Cheney Declares She’ll Campaign for Democrats if Trump Secures GOP Nomination

Liz Cheney, the Republican representative from Wyoming, declared at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday that she will no longer be a Republican if former President Donald Trump is chosen as the party’s candidate for president in 2024.

“I’m going to make sure Donald Trump, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure he is not the nominee. And if he is the nominee, I won’t be a Republican,” Cheney declared. Cheney has stated that she will run for Democrats in order to prevent Republican candidates from winning who support false election claims. Cheney was discussing the Arizona governor’s race and how she would seek to prevent the election of GOP contender Kari Lake, a former television journalist who has become a strong proponent of Trump’s election fraud falsehoods.  “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure Kari Lake is not elected,” Cheney further remarked.

“Lot of Bad Policies in Biden Administration”

Cheney said “Yes” when asked whether it included running for office as a Democrat. Cheney would not, however, go so far as to state that she wanted the Democrats to continue to have the majority in the House of Representatives beyond the midterm elections. Even if the Biden administration has many “bad policies,” Cheney stated, “I think it’s really important that voters recognize and understand what the Republican Conference in the House of Representatives consists of today.”

Last month’s primary contest between Cheney and Trump-backed lawyer Harriet Hageman marked a turning point in the larger debate about the direction of the Republican Party. Cheney, who was once seen as a rising star, was ousted from the House GOP leadership last year due to her steadfast opposition to the former President. As she assisted in leading the House select committee looking into the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, she fell behind in polls back home this year.

However, Cheney has continued to avoid the topic of whether she would run for President in 2024 as concerns about her upcoming political actions loom. She said, “It’s not about me or making a decision about what I’m going to do. I certainly will do whatever it takes to make sure Donald Trump isn’t anywhere close to the Oval Office.”

Cheney’s advisors have told CNN that she plans to postpone making any choices until after she leaves office as vice chair of the House January 6 committee and is no longer a member of Congress. She is aware of the risk of appearing to politicise the committee’s conclusions.

She does, however, receive the type of attention from the select committee that other Republican Trump opponents have found difficult to obtain. When Cheney leaves office in January, she would have the same problem; the only way to solve it could be to run for president.

“Pence Has Obligation to Speak With Committee”

Regarding the current status of negotiations between the committee and Mike Pence’s legal representative, Cheney stated that she thought Pence had an “obligation” to communicate with the committee. Although she respects presidential privilege, she considers it to be “not absolute.”

According to Cheney, the committee has not yet decided whether to send a case for prosecution to the Department of Justice based on its inquiry, but when it does, she expects the decision will be “unanimous.”

However, she did mention that the Secret Service had provided the committee with around 800,000 pages in answer to a subpoena, and she emphasised that the records include a tonne of fresh material.

Regarding whether the texts sent by specific Secret Service officers the day before and during the attack on the Capitol have vanished, Cheney stated, “The text messages themselves, in many cases, are gone. There are other forms of communication like teams messages and emails. And other forms of communication and we have received probably about 800,000 pages at least.”

When asked to recall a special moment she had since the Capitol attack with her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, she recalled that on New Year’s Day of this year, as she was leaving his house, he had told her to “defend the republic, daughter.” She added that it was a moment she will never forget.

Trump’s 2020 Election Claims Supported

Only two of the ten Republican House members who supported impeaching Trump made it through their primary elections; the other nine were defeated, and four either retired or decided not to run for reelection. NPR reports that the bulk of the 2022 midterm candidates Trump backed won, and they also reportedly backed his bogus statements regarding the 2020 election.

What Are We Going to Do to Make Sure We Don’t Contribute to Republic Unraveling?

The term of Cheney expires on January 3, 2023. The possibility of Cheney running for president in 2024 has generated speculation, but she hasn’t made any clear public declarations about it. When Smith questioned Cheney about when she would declare her candidacy, Cheney dodged the question, saying:

“What are we going to do to make sure that our kids know what it means to have peaceful transfers of power?” replied she. “And what are we going to do to make sure that we don’t contribute to the unraveling of the Republic? … That’s what I’m focused on.”

Liz Calls Democrats of New York and Virginia “Baby Killers”

Liz said on Fox and Friends that Democrats in blue areas like New York and Virginia are killing babies and turning maternity hospitals into slaughter grounds. She realized the value of human life after having five children, to the point that she is opposed to any restrictions on abortion outside of medical facilities that support Planned Parenthood.

Admits She Was Wrong About Same-Sex Marriage

In fact, it is thought that this is the first time she has regretted saying something. She firmly supports traditional marriage on Fox News Sunday, despite the fact that her sister is a partner in a same-sex union. “I love her so much. I love her family very much. This is just an issue that we disagree on,” she insisted. In the end, she admitted it during a 60 Minute Interview. After that, a Gallup survey conducted in June showed that for the first time in 28 years, Republicans had come to an understanding regarding same-sex marriage.

She remarked, “We are defending against a domestic threat that we have never faced before.” She described Donald Trump as a domestic threat to the country and said that Republicans should not be loyal to him because of this.

She was relating the incident of a Republican house member who exclaimed, “The things we do for orange Jesus,” referring to Trump. Since Liz shared her account of the incident, this term has become more common on social media.

Being ‘Heartbroken’ Isn’t a Policy

Outraged that the Biden administration had undone four years of progress on protecting the US-Mexico border, GOP leaders made immigration a key priority.

At a press conference, Cheney declared, “We are going to be very focused as a conference on what’s happening at the border, on working to make sure that, as the Biden administration refuses to open schools, they have instead decided to open the border and to let in thousands of people potentially who have got COVID. You’ve got children at the border that have been separated again from their parents, and being ‘heartbroken’ isn’t a policy.”

Made a Heavy Investment in Security

She lost her position as chair of the House Republican Conference after denouncing and impeaching Trump for his participation in the Capital riot and chastising him for distributing misleading information about the 2020 election.

Following that, she started to get death threats because of her criticism and call for Trump’s impeachment, which prompted her campaign to spend 58,000 on her security.

Plenty of religious leaders claim to have some form of “divine protection” but not many of them are brave enough to attempt to prove it. One pastor, though, did possess that courage – or stupidity – and he locked himself in a cage of lions to make his point.
