Former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy has expressed harsh criticism of President Biden’s management of foreign policy. His concerns revolved around the Afghanistan withdrawal, the Iranian prisoner exchange, and what he viewed as a worrisome shift away from military readiness.
Navy SEAL’s Critique of President Biden
Sheehy did not hold back in his criticism. He said: “We’re encouraging our generals and admirals to focus on social issues instead of combat readiness. We need to really focus on getting our military back to combat lethality.”
The Afghanistan Withdrawal
One of Sheehy’s most significant grievances revolved around the execution of the Afghanistan withdrawal. He deemed it a disastrous foreign policy decision, assigning blame to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and President Biden. President Biden’s $6 billion prisoner exchange deal with Iran secured the release of five Americans but encountered opposition in Congress, particularly from Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas. Cotton contended that the deal effectively placed a “$1.2 billion bounty on the capture of any American hostage.”
Persistent and Aggressive Adversaries
Sheehy claimed that the Iran deal, following the Afghan withdrawal, served only to embolden one of America’s most persistent and aggressive adversaries. To him, this represented a disgrace to diligent American troops, intelligence professionals, and service members.
A Disgrace to American Troops
Sheehy said: “For us to continue to enable that – to pay them billions of dollars, to give them access to their billions of dollars of state reserves – is doing nothing but empowering one of America’s most persistent and aggressive adversaries. It’s a disgrace to all the American troops, intelligence professionals, and service folks who have been working diligently for decades to try to contain the Iranian threat.”
The Military’s Core Mission
Sheehy claimed that the military’s primary mission is to “close with and kill the enemy” and to advance American interests through force when necessary. While the preference was to avoid using said force unless absolutely necessary, Sheehy insisted that it was important to equip and prepare the military to fulfill its mission effectively.

The former Navy SEAL said: “Now, we don’t want to use that military force unless we absolutely have to and we don’t want to send our young boys and girls overseas unless there’s a very good reason to do so. However, we must always be equipping our military and ensuring that what we’re equipping them with, how we’re manning them, all aligns with their mission.”
Social Experimentation vs. Combat Readiness
Focusing on social experimentation and social initiatives, according to Sheehy, has come at the expense of combat readiness. He said that diverting resources and attention away from military preparedness endangers the nation’s security.
