Democratic State Representative Gloria Johnson has announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Tennessee, challenging Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn hasn’t held back, quickly making some very strong, and perhaps misguided, statements about her opponent.
Marsha Blackburn’s Accusations
In response to Johnson’s bold announcement, Senator Marsha Blackburn released a video where she characterized her opponent as a “socialist” and claimed that Johnson poses a “direct threat to our way of life.”
A Deep Misunderstanding
Blackburn also alleged that “liberals” are already lining up to fund Johnson’s campaign, indicating a deep linguistic misunderstanding given that liberal ideologies and socialist ideologies are very far apart. She also appealed to fellow conservatives to contribute to her own campaign.
Liberals vs. Socialists
True liberals and true socialists couldn’t be further apart and the former group would be more likely to align with conservative views than socialist views; both conservatives and liberals are in favor of capitalism. Liberals, when looking at the international political spectrum, are center-right. They support capitalism but don’t harbor far-right views like many conservatives. On the other hand, socialists oppose capitalism and, as such, are left-wing. Some hold authoritarian views while others are anarchists – just like people on the far-right.
Johnson’s Activism and Background
Johnson previously gained national attention when she was one of three State Representatives facing expulsion votes during the Tennessee General Assembly for protesting gun violence in the aftermath of the Nashville Covenant school shooting. This background adds to her appeal among progressive voters who support stricter gun control measures.
Blackburn’s Rhetoric on Television
Senator Blackburn took her criticism of Johnson to national television, appearing on Fox News to repeatedly label her opponent a “socialist.” Blackburn has even gone as far as saying that Johnson makes prominent Democrats like Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer look like moderates. It’s worth noting that Biden is, in fact, moderate at best; the left is against capitalism and Biden is not.
The Abortion Debate
One of the main points of contention in this race is in regard to abortion rights. Blackburn accused Johnson of supporting abortion “up to the last minute before and after birth.” Johnson refuted the claim, stating her alignment with the Roe v. Wade standard – abortion up to 24 weeks of gestation.
Johnson’s Growing Support
Since launching her U.S. Senate campaign, Johnson has reported substantial growth in her following, with over 10,000 new supporters joining her cause. The momentum is helping her to feel energized and she hopes to maintain it throughout her campaign. If she succeeds in her endeavor, it will be the first time Tennessee has elected a Democratic senator since the 90s.
Democrats and Socialism
It’s very important to note that while Blackburn has characterized Johnson as a “socialist,” she most definitely doesn’t fit the description. The Democratic Party, as a whole, is not accurately characterized that way either.
Democrats and the Center-Right Perspective
Within the international political spectrum, the Democratic Party is objectively positioned as center-right rather than far-left or socialist; the party’s policies do not oppose capitalism. Instead, they focus on progressive taxation, healthcare reform, and climate action. While some individual Democrats may genuinely be left-wing, the party, as a whole, is not.

The Democratic Party in the United States encompasses a wide range of perspectives, reflecting the diversity of its members – a symptom of a two-party system. Even though the party as a whole is not left-wing, it’s still the most appealing party for actual left-wingers because they have no other option.
The Diversity of Democrats
The party’s diversity is evident in the policy positions taken by its leaders. As an example, President Joe Biden has advocated for policies such as the Affordable Care Act, which aligns more with center-right positions than genuine leftist positions. A leftist alternative would be nationalized healthcare for all, free at the point of use.
The Economic Policies
On economic issues, the Democratic Party tends to support a mixed-market approach that combines elements of capitalism with government intervention to address social and economic inequalities. This includes policies like increasing the minimum wage, expanding access to healthcare, and investing in education and job training.
A Leftist Alternative
The aforementioned positions are not indicative of a socialist agenda but rather reflect a centralist stance at best. A leftist alternative would be the abolition of privately owned companies, in favor of workers owning the means of production. Another leftist alternative would be the abolition of money entirely.
Democrats and Foreign Policy
In foreign policy, Democrats have traditionally supported international engagement and diplomacy, as opposed to isolationism. They emphasize multilateral cooperation in an approach that is in line with mainstream international relations thinking rather than socialist ideology. A leftist alternative would be the belief in abolishing international borders entirely. With these things considered, one can begin to see how the Democratic Party is almost as far from far-left as the Republican Party.
A Fascist Dictator
News of Blackburn’s words was shared across the internet and people were largely critical. One person said: “Marsha Blackburn is a direct threat to every value Americans hold dear. She is a fascist who will do whatever her wannabe fascist dictator Trump tells her to do.”
Blackburn Is Nervous
Others implied that Blackburn is lashing out because she feels nervous and threatened. One individual said: “Blackburn must be feeling the heat. They gave her a shot at the seat and she didn’t do anything for the people.”
A Fascist Christian Nationalist
Some people were baffled by Blackburn’s claims. “Gloria Johnson is not a socialist but Marsha Blackburn is a fascist Christian nationalist,” one individual said. “I’m sorry but how is Johnson a socialist? Republicans are labeling anyone remotely progressive a ‘socialist’ now?” another echoed.
Republicans Are Removing Rights
Another person said: “[Blackburn’s] claim does not have merit when the facts show Republicans are working hard to remove our rights so they can control us to their liking. So to throw out a claim they have no proof [of] is just to [instill] fear in those who do not understand what reality shows.”
