“We Need Smarter Politicians”: Vivek Ramaswamy Wants to Shut Down the U.S. Department of Education

Multimillionaire investor and Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has recently made headlines with his announcement of a forthcoming speech in which he plans to address the potential shutdown of the U.S. Department of Education.

Existing Legal Authority

Ramaswamy’s proposal is rooted in his belief in the existence of existing legal authority that could facilitate the action. However, his announcement has not gone without criticism and billionaire investor Mark Cuban has responded with a series of pointed questions and alternative suggestions.

Mark Cuban’s Economic Concerns

Cuban’s initial response to Ramaswamy’s plan raised crucial concerns about the economic consequences of such a radical action. He questioned whether shutting down the U.S. Department of Education and similar three-letter agencies would result in the United States failing to meet its financial commitments and contractual obligations.

Substantial Financial Settlements

Cuban pointed out that a move like Ramaswamy’s suggestion would likely necessitate hiring a substantial number of lawyers to handle the inevitable legal disputes, which could lead to very large financial settlements.

A Deadbeat Country

Cuban said: “So you want us to be a deadbeat country that doesn’t pay its bills or fulfill its contractual obligations committed to by the three-letter-agencies you would close and instead spend that money on hiring [thousands of] lawyers to handle the thousands of lawsuits that will end with billions in settlements?”

A Results-Driven Approach

Rather than advocating for the outright elimination of government departments, Cuban proposed an alternative path forward. He emphasized the importance of developing a results-driven plan that identifies areas within these agencies where efficiencies and improvements can be implemented.

Pandering Like a Politician

Cuban went on to argue that pursuing such improvements could result in a better-educated populace and increased energy efficiency. Moreover, he believes his approach will achieve this all while reducing the financial burden on taxpayers.

Circumventing Economic Disruption

In essence, Cuban’s argument was that instead of abruptly dismantling government agencies, a more prudent approach would be to seek opportunities to enhance their effectiveness and reduce costs. This approach could circumvent the economic disruption caused by legal battles and ensure that the government fulfills its obligations to its citizens.

Potential Political Pandering

Cuban concluded his response by raising a significant question about Ramaswamy’s motivations. Noting that Ramaswamy has never held a political office, Cuban suggested that his proposal might be more about political “pandering” than a genuine search for effective solutions to the challenges facing the nation.

Forward-Thinking Political Leaders

In response to a comment asserting that “three-letter agencies are a waste of money,” Cuban advocated for a more nuanced perspective. He argued that the core issue may not be the existence of these agencies but rather the need for smarter politicians who can devise and implement innovative policies. Cuban’s implication was clear – the solution to government inefficiency lies in the hands of capable and forward-thinking political leaders.

The Need for Smarter Politicians

“Just because he or other politicians can’t come up with solutions is no reason to shut it down. Maybe we just need smarter politicians,” Cuban said. “School him, Mark,” fellow investor Susan Lassiter-Lyons replied.

A Microcosm of a Broader Debate

The discourse between Cuban and Ramaswamy was very much a microcosm of broader debates surrounding government policies and the responsibilities of politicians. While Ramaswamy’s proposal may have sparked the conversation, Cuban’s counterarguments highlighted the importance of thoughtful and results-oriented governance.

Ultimately, Cuban and Ramaswamy’s exchange conveyed the need for smarter politicians who can address complex issues with innovative solutions rather than resorting to sweeping generalizations or drastic measures.

The Internet Responded

News of the interaction was shared across the internet and people flocked to comment sections to voice their views. One person said: “That is gonna be hard since smart people don’t want the job. When it comes to politics, the one that wants the job is usually the worst for the job.”

The Three-Letter Agencies Are Necessary

Another individual said: “Contrary to MAGA belief, all of the three-letter agencies are doing necessary work. You can argue about specific actions they may take but if we suddenly did away with them we would regret it.”

Others suggested Cuban run for president, claiming he’d be better than almost any other Republican. One person said: “Maybe Mark Cuban should run for president. He seems smarter than any of the current Republican field, except for maybe Nikki Haley.”

Intelligence vs. Honesty

Some people suggested a different approach, highlighting that sometimes there are more important traits than intelligence. One individual wrote: “Not smarter politicians – honest politicians. [But] we know honesty is not a trait that today’s politicians work to develop.”

Politicians With Common Sense

Another person said: “We need politicians with common sense, politicians with the ability to actually think of the common person when in office. We need people with their own thoughts and values, not a party system dictating how they think and feel.”

Arrogant but Smart

Others praised Cuban, recognizing his faults while also acknowledging his strengths. One person said: “I like Mark Cuban. He’s arrogant but he’s really smart. He’s a U.S. citizen like most of us [and] has to right to voice his opinions.”
