“Alice Cooper Just Outed Himself as a Transphobe”: Legendary Rock Star Says Being Transgender Is a “Fad”

Renowned rock icon Alice Cooper has expressed concerns about transgender activism. Cooper, whose real name is Vincent Damon Furnier, boasts a career spanning several decades as a theatrical rock star.

A Sad and Dangerous Fad

Other prominent rock figures, like Paul Stanley from Kiss and Dee Snider from Twisted Sister, have also expressed reservations about certain aspects of transgender advocacy. Stanley even referred to some elements as a “sad and dangerous fad.” It’s worth noting that these opinions are based on feelings as opposed to scientific research, which largely supports both transgender adults and children.

Cooper shared Stanley’s view. Speaking to Stereogum, he called the concept of being transgender a “fad” and raised concerns about its impact on children. He went on to acknowledge that genuine transgender people exist but cautioned against the perceived rise of people claiming such identities as a trend.

Cooper and Stanley Are Mistaken

The increasing visibility of trans issues in contemporary discourse doesn’t signify a fad, but rather a culmination of long-overdue recognition and understanding. The heightened awareness of transgender experiences is a result of society becoming more open and inclusive, allowing individuals to express their authentic selves without fear. In other words, there are more openly transgender people now because the idea of being trans is more visible and accepted, not because it’s a “fad” or “trend.”

Concerns About Children

Cooper expressed concerns about young children being encouraged to question their gender identity, arguing that it can be perplexing for them. He claimed that even teenagers can find the concept of gender identity confusing as they grapple with self-discovery.

The Visibility of Trans People

Research proves the rock star wrong, conveying that children often find concepts such as gender identity and sexual orientation easier to understand than adults do. Moreover, kids aren’t being actively encouraged to question their gender. It’s common for trans people to know something is off from a young age and children can find the answers easily nowadays because transgender people are more visible.

Inclusive Language and Terminology

Cooper also challenged the idea of inclusive language and terminology and singled out replacing “mother” with “birthing person” – a term that is not applied to cisgender women and only exists for transgender men and non-binary people. He said that he respects individuals for who they are but wouldn’t advise a young child to embrace a different gender identity without a proper understanding of the concept.

Misunderstanding Biological Sex

The rock star emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to become sexually aware of themselves before diving into the more complex issue of gender identity. He highlighted the biological distinction between male and female, and based it on genitals, while acknowledging that one’s gender identity can evolve later in life. It’s worth noting that biological sex is actually based on a combination of primary sex characteristics, secondary sex characteristics, and chromosomes – not just genitals.

Ignoring the Science

Despite pushback from the interviewer, who stressed the importance of listening to children and finding appropriate medical guidance, Cooper stood firm in his opinions. He expressed concerns that transgender activism might lead to unforeseen consequences, such as enabling individuals to exploit the situation for personal gain. “I can see somebody really taking advantage of this. A guy can walk into a woman’s bathroom at any time and just say, ‘I just feel like I’m a woman today’ and have the time of his life in there,” he said, referencing a common anti-trans talking point that has been debunked numerous times.

The Internet Responded

News of Cooper’s words was shared across the internet and opinions were divided. “So Alice Cooper has just outed himself as a transphobe and as someone who has zero understanding of biological sex,” one person wrote. “The worst part is he’s probably not transphobic deep down. He’s quoting TERF ideology word for word. Sounds like he’s been listening to TERFs more than trans people and they’ve gotten the better of him,” another responded.

A Very Sad Situation

Some commenters were saddened by the situation. “I don’t get how opinions like this still exist. It takes five minutes to do a bit of research and see that letting trans kids be themselves is fundamental to preventing trans suicide. This is very sad,” one person wrote.

Transphobes Felt Validated

Unfortunately, Cooper’s words made transphobes feel validated. “Appears people are starting to speak up against this nonsense and their attempts of abuse against the young in society,” one person wrote. “How do you explain why the same people who are against [letting trans kids express themselves] are somehow also for child marriages?” another hit back.

Others Occupied the Middle Ground

Some commenters celebrated trans visibility while also expressing concerns. “Kids change their minds frequently. I have two teens in my family who were trans for a year with different names now they’re back to birth names and pronouns. It’s a good thing that more trans kids are comfortable coming out. People are in denial though if they don’t think there are kids that will do it for attention. Kids know they can say they’re trans and change their name and get instant support and praise from family and peers.”
